Hemp CBD Oil: What It Is and What to Know Before You Buy

September 30, 2020

What Is CBD?

We’re hearing more and more about using and buying CBD oil these days: in the news, in trusted healthcare publications, and from our friends and neighbors. Many people say CBD oil calms them down, reduces their seizures, enhances their mood, and relieves aches and pains. You can purchase various forms of CBD: from capsules to tinctures, edibles to topicals. CBD is so ubiquitous that you can find it in all sorts of products, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and even food and drink.

So what is the truth about CBD and other cannabinoids? What do we actually know? How do you tell the difference between similar products and decide what to buy? For instance, do you need the pure CBD isolate powder, or is natural hemp CBD oil better for your needs? Today, we’ll discuss a bit about where CBD comes from, how it works, and how you can choose a quality hemp CBD product that suits you best.

What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of about a hundred substances, or cannabinoids, that make up hemp and marijuana plants. Geneticists breed both hemp and marijuana so that they can extract their oils and substances, including CBD, or the more well-known cannabinoid known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is cannabis’s psychoactive component and marijuana’s major active ingredient. Notably, one major advantage of hemp-derived CBD oil over marijuana-derived oil is that hemp contains only trace amounts of THC. Specifically, because hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, hemp CBD oil is legal in almost every state, and it won’t get you high. In fact, many people integrate CBD use into their daily routines because they appreciate its effects.

How Does CBD Work in the Body?

Believe it or not, the human body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS). Complex chemical processes in our bodies yield cannabis-like chemicals and neurotransmitters that bind to receptors in our cells. This fact, combined with animal studies and some initial human trials, suggests that CBD might affect many important bodily functions. CBD affects our endocannabinoid receptors without directly binding to them to create a high like THC does. Other cannabinoids may also play a role, as we discuss later.

It’s exciting to contemplate just how many systems of the human body that cannabinoids like CBD might actually affect. According to a paper in the journal Neuro Endocrinology Letters, the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) can be found in brain areas associated with emotions, movement, and other behaviors and regulatory processes. Cells in many of our organs have this receptor as well, including the liver, pancreas, digestive tract, muscles, heart, and reproductive system. Another cannabinoid receptor, The CB2R, regulates immune system functions.

Harvard Health Blog and others have cited strong scientific evidence for CBD’s use to reduce some childhood seizures. In fact, a CBD formula called Epidiolex is FDA-approved to treat two seizure disorders known as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

Some preliminary research has also suggested that CBD might even turn out to be an effective potential treatment for insomnia, anxiety, and even chronic pain. However, until we have positive results from rigorous clinical trials, research into CBD’s myriad potential benefits is considered only preliminary. Specifically, certain clinical trials are considered the gold standard in scientific research because they control other variables and make it easier to discover whether or not the drug or herbal supplement being tried is effective for the condition being studied. These are called randomized, placebo-controlled trials. In the meantime, while scientists study CBD and other cannabinoids, everyday consumers continue to experiment on their own or while consulting practitioners familiar with natural healthcare solutions.

Full-Spectrum CBD Oil Versus Pure CBD Isolate

When farmers extract full-spectrum CBD oil from hemp, they include all of the plant’s natural ingredients and not just THC and CBD. These whole-plant components include aromatic substances called terpenes, flavonoids to create that distinctive earthy taste, cannabinoids, fatty acids, chlorophyll, and other oils and waxes. Full-spectrum hemp CBD oil doesn’t leave out any of the whole-plant ingredients.

Notably, full-spectrum CBD oil includes trace amounts of THC, while broad-spectrum CBD oil specifically leaves THC out. In contrast, CBD isolate manufacturers extract CBD from the plant and then refine it to create a processed, white powder that they claim is 99% pure CBD. When purchasing CBD or any other herbal product, it’s always important to look closely at the company who makes it. Quality, transparency, and other ethical practices are all essential.

To be clear, people wishing to purchase natural, unprocessed CBD should not choose CBD isolate. In addition, many cannabis enthusiasts believe that full-spectrum hemp CBD oil creates an entourage effect. This special cannabis synergy is the result of all the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other whole-plant components working together to affect the human body. Interestingly, this synergistic effect is not unique to hemp and marijuana products. In fact, it’s one reason why herbal practitioners will often create formulas containing multiple herbs, and doctors will often prescribe multiple medications for the same condition.

Like many effects and properties of cannabis, the entourage effect is still being studied. Specifically, aside from THC and CBD, scientists are interested in several cannabinoids that show promise, including CBG and CBN.

Purchasing All-Natural, Full-Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil

We’re passionate about natural, well-made products. That’s why started Corvash Farms to provide high-quality, full-spectrum hemp CBD oil tinctures and sprays extracted from selectively-bred, high-CBD hemp strains. To use a CBD oil tincture or spray, people put a dropper full under the tongue.

In support of the entourage effect, Corvash Farms uses only a gentle CO2 extraction process to maintain whole-plant integrity. Anthony Rushford, owner of Corvash Farms, began collecting hemp seeds at age 13. For over 20 years, he has been cultivating a specific breed of hemp that Corvash Farms uses today.

Inspired by the pioneers of early America, Corvash Farms uses only natural fertilizers and no synthetics in their growing operations. Additionally, Rushford’s personal inspiration comes from the positive full-spectrum hemp experiences of a family member who was gravely ill.

If you are interested in purchasing a full-spectrum CBD oil tincture or spray, pay attention to quality and potency. All of the Corvash Farms products offer value for the money, and keep in mind that the amount of CBD per dropper of oil varies from product to product. Furthermore, all of the Corvash Farms products have been tested by an independent laboratory to ensure they are as strong as claimed. The lab tests show the variety of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other whole-plant components present in every bottle, with CBD and CBD-A in the highest concentrations.
